Remington marketed 3 inch chambered barrels for shooting steel in a 2 34 action. In a 1925 letter promoting the Long Range Wild Fowl double Hunter Arms stated that using a 2 34 shell in a 3 chamber would cause a 5 loss in pattern There was also some theoretical concern that using 2 12 shells in a 2 78 or 3 chamber would allow the fiber wads to tip and obstruct the bore at the forcing cones.
2 3 4 Vs 3 Inch Vs 3 5 Inch Shotgun Shells The Hunting Gear Guy
In a 3 you can shoot 3 and 2 34.
. Only the 2-34 inch chambered version of the 1100 will have two. Type of gun action. If you have a shotgun with a 2 ¾ chamber barrel dont put a 3 chamber barrel on it unless it has a receiver rated for 3 shells -- the same for putting a 3 ½ chamber barrel on a 3 gun.
If it is Beretta is sure in trouble as just about all their target guns meant for 2-34 shells have 3chambers. I shoot a beretta a400 unico now and i. It typically means you can shoot shells up to 3 in length.
The last article I read in a popular shooting mag says that when you shoot a 2 12 or 2 34 shell in a 3 12 chamber problems can arise because the shot may have to travel up to an inch before it reaches the chamber cone. It is normally not a problem to chamber for 3inch shells but it depends on the gun. Of course going the other way and shooting 3 shells in 2-34chambers is baaaad.
But you knew that. As to question 1 is shooting a 2-34 shell in a 3 chamber damaging. If it says 2 34 then dont shoot 3 or 3 12 through it.
But the early 2-916 or 58 12g cant rember chambers are reamed to 2 34 all the time. One gun i can think if is the winchester model 12 the 3 inch shells wont clear the ejection port. This gun was my pheasant hunting gun.
It might chamber but dangerous to fire. Also consider that many 2 ¾ shotguns are not built for the power level of a 3 shell. Originally posted by scratchgolf72 View Post.
A shotgun with a 3-inch chamber will work flawlessly with both 3-inch and 2 ¾-inch shotshells. If a gun only wants a specific shell it may mention it explicitly. You will have no problem using 2 34 shells in a 3 chambered shotgun.
And yes your ignorance is shining quite bright today. In a 2 34 chamber you can only shoot just that 2 34. Moreover can a Remington 1100 shoot 3 inch shells.
A 3 chamber will shoot 3 and 2 34 just fine and no it wont cycle one better then the other unless you have a gun with an older gas system then it may not cycle light target loads well. As to whether a 2 34 load will cycle in a 3 inch chamber the answer is an absolute maybe. If the shell is shorter than the chamber it is fine 2 34 in a 3in Chamber.
With shotguns they awlays say how big ofa shell you can put in. You can shoot a shorter shell but cannot shoot a shell longer than your chamber is marked for. Why dont 2 ¾ inch shells jam in a 3-inch chamber.
As far as having a 3 12 chamber its fine to shoot 2 34 and 3 shells through it. I guess if it really bothers you you can always take it to a gun smith and have the chambers measured. Remingtons instructions stated not to use 3 inch lead loads in such a combo however.
If your chamber says 3 12 then you can shoot 2 34 3 and 3 12 out of it. The pressure curve for steel ammo is different than normal lead shot ammo. Can 2 34 slugg fit in 3 chamber yeah 275s will work just fine however if you had a 12g and tried fitting 35s in a barrel that said 3in youd end up takin it to the gunsmith to get em out.
As an avid shotgunner for many years i usually use 2 34 shells and have shotguns in 2 34 and 3 as far as patterns go i would probably expect that optimum would be to use 234 in the same size chamber and the same with 3 that said my Winchester 1300 has a 3chamber as does my Fabarm SXS but i usually only use 2 34 shells in them no problems at allbut does 2 34. The 1100 can shoot only 2 34 or 3 shells depending on the barrel installed and with the 1187 models with magnum barrels can shoot both 2 34 and 3 shells. The Mossberg 935 says 3 and 3 12 and I dont think will cycle 2 34.
The answer is indeed very simple. If the gun is in good shap have the chamber opened up so that you can safely fire 2 34shells. So you should be fine shooting 2 34.
Barrel says 3 shells on it doesnt mention 2 34. At least the 3 12 inch shells are enough longer that they wont chamber in a normal chamber but most 2 34. The magnum 1100 barrel has only one.
If they are 2 916 you can have the chambers cut for 2 34 shells or buy the specialty shotgun shell that are shorter than 2 34. It only makes sense to do this because somewhere somehow some idiot is going to try to shoot 3 inch shells in that gun even though it is marked 2-34 inch only and then that idiot or his family will bring a lawsuit against the gunmaker if the gun fails and injures the shooter. This extra empty chamber length then acts like an expansion chamber and upsets the performance of the powder.
Just never try to shoot a 3in in a 2 34 in chamber. The only time you could run into problems is if you tried using a shell LARGER not smaller than the number printed on the shotgun. The 3 dot sights and relatively short barrel length are a hindrance to anything to anything else but turkey hunting.
There isnt anything illegally or physically preventing someone from using a 835 for clays or duck hunting but you will wish for something else. Shooting 2 34 If you shoot a lot of 2 34 shells in it and dont clean it well you may have a hard time getting 3 12 shells in there as some crud may build up in the chamber. Its definately not a good idea to do it.
So in a 3 12 gun you can fire whatever shell you please. Because yours is a pump thats all you have to worry about. Because a 2 ¾ shell is shorter its definitely going to fit into the chamber of a shotgun.
Using a 35 shell in a 3 inch labeled shotgun 3 inch shell used in a 25 inch labeled shotgun etc etc.
